Sewing Arts 101 (4 classes)

Students begin with the foundational craft that underlies all textile arts. Through hands-on projects learners encounter mathematics as a living tool: calculating fabric requirements, working with   fractions in seam allowances, understanding scale in pattern adjustments, and discovering how geometric principles determine whether a sleeve actually fits an armhole.

Color theory emerges naturally through fabric selection. Students learn to see relationships between hues, values, and saturation not as abstract concepts but as practical decisions that determine whether a finished piece looks intentional or accidental. Design theory grounds every project: Why does this silhouette work? What makes a proportion pleasing? How do constraints (budget, available materials, skill level) shape creative solutions?

Students leave with a portfolio full of ideas, projects, a working vocabulary for discussing design, and grounded mathematical comprehension they can use for understanding math in school and life. All built through successful application.
